Deerns consultant wins prestigious PhD thesis prize

Last month our consultant Dr. Yasin Toparlar was the winner of one of two ECCOMAS Awards, which he received at a conference in Krakow for his dissertation “A multiscale analysis of the urban heat island effect: From city averaged temperatures to the energy demand of individual buildings”. The other award was won by Dr. Brian Staber (France) for his thesis “Stochastic analysis, simulation and identification of hyperelastic constitutive equations”.

ECCOMAS, the European Community on Computational Methods in Applied Sciences, annually awards two prizes to honour excellent performance of young scientists. We quote its international jury: “These theses are outstanding works in Computational Methods in Applied Sciences combining excellent knowledge of both theory and practice, with special insight in the fundamental and computational aspects.” Both winners’ research extends the frontiers of the fields of ECCOMAS, says the jury, “and opens our community to new problems and methodologies. The award decision was based on the relevance of the topics, the originality of the theses, their scientific content and the innovative numerical developments. Moreover, both theses are very well written and meticulously presented.”

Our firm is proud to have Yasin as our colleague – who earlier this year also won the Royal Dutch Institute of Engineers’ Charles Hoogendoorn Award for the best dissertation on fluid mechanics.
