Working on Schiphol Airports for more than 40 years

It is the summer holiday season and during this period many people take flights to various destinations. By far most flights in the Netherlands depart from Schiphol, so it is good to know that Schiphol is in the top 15 of best airports in the world. Why? The airport, which has existed since 1916, is famous for its extensive choice of activities for killing time while waiting; you can also dive into a good book in Schiphol’s library. This is evident from the recently presented annual survey of Skytrax.

A consultant for more than 40 years

Deerns, which celebrates its 90th anniversary this year, has been a consultant of Schiphol for more than 40 years and, through various projects, contributes to making the airport even more comfortable. The latest agreement with Schiphol was signed recently: In the next four years, Deerns will be one of the parties that advises Schiphol in the field of M&E systems for the buildings linked to the airport. In 2017, Deerns was closely involved in the development of a temporary departure hall to accommodate the recent strong growth of passengers travelling to countries in the Schengen Area. Deerns was also involved in the realisation of extra security filters in Departure Halls 2 and 3 in 2017 after it became apparent in the spring of 2017 that the capacity was insufficient. Other recent projects to make the journey more comfortable include the upgrading of the piers and Lounge 2. Lounge 2 is the shopping area beyond passport control where passengers from all corners of the world (approximately 14 million a year) remain until they depart. The new layout of the lounge provides a better passenger flow and 20 percent more retail and catering space. The piers are undergoing a metamorphosis because it is no longer necessary to carry out security checks at the gates due to the introduction of new central security checkpoints at Schiphol. The disappearance of the old security checkpoints provides more space on piers D to G. This space can be used to make these piers attractive for travellers by redesigning them and providing extra facilities. At the end of 2021, the last pier (E) must be ready as planned. More projects can be found elsewhere on the website.

Assessed by consumers

In the annual list recently announced by the airport’s consumer website Skytrax, it appears that Schiphol Airport belongs to the 15 best airports in the world. Singapore Changi International Airport is at the top of the list. The Skytrax annual ranking list is based on the opinion of 14 million airline passengers from a hundred countries. More than 550 airports are included in the survey, which were assessed on 39 criteria in terms of service and facilities, including comfort, the location of toilets and language skills of the airport staff. 20 juillet 2018
